Where Would You Look for This Art?

May 8, 2013

An art both practical and rare, it can bring both admiration

and communication.  Scholarly visitors to this part of the

world treasure the smallest samples despite the high cost.

Venice’s oldest paper shop, Legatoria Piazzesi,  has been making

traditional handcrafted books and paper since 1851.

Apprentice Andrea Andreatti noticed us gazing in the window

late one night as he was locking the door.  Andrea was caring

enough to invite us in for a wonderful tour of paper art in forms

we had no idea existed.  It was clear he loved and appreciated the

craft as much as we did.

Paper is thought to have been first manufactured in Italy

around 1220 and Germany by 1400.
